Case Study

United Bulk Carriers
United Bulk Carriers (UBC), a commercial manager of a dry cargo fleet, was founded in April 2001 by long-time traditional ship owners. The company’s fleet consists of bulk/multi purpose vessels ranging from 17 to 38,000 deadweight tons.

UBC was using mail, fax and email for planning, execution and reporting functions and needed a software solution to streamline these processes.  They tested a number of different systems over a period of 18 months. None of the software they tested had a proper accounting interface, a lay time module that worked within the complete system, or a Pooling-module.

UBC’s search led them to Veson Nautical’s Integrated Maritime Office System (IMOS). The system’s database was impressive and Veson’s ability to deliver a tailored solution that met all UBC’s needs was very appealing. UBC especially liked the voyage calculation module’s user-friendly format that is easy to copy and simultaneously shows short-versions of multiple estimates on screen for comparisons and adjustments. In addition, the ability to update and reconcile accounts within the voyage-calculation module, including fixture-notes for multiple uses, was important.

Trygve Knutsen, Managing Director of UBC concludes, “IMOS saves a tremendous amount of time and effort, especially when it comes to funding port-agents and reconciling accounts. We have not had a visit from our accountants since we implemented the system. Suffice to say this is the last software package we’ll have to purchase.”

"We believe that the IMOS today is by far the most comprehensive and flexible tool for commercial operations. In fact, we have decided to use IMOS for our other commercial management companies because we know it will deliver. Veson′s software should be utilized by as many shipping companies as possible."
